JM, Zapkinson has been alongtime poster, just a very busy guy!
For those whom are new here at HOD, Zapkinson is the writer of the Unreel drum Method, the drum charts of Randy Waldmans Unreel cd featuring Vinnie. Available thru Warner Brothers.
His real name is Marc and he just did all the charts for Greg Bisonettes latest DVD.
I don't have the BRMSC1, just 2, but besides the mainly Vinnie [awa Weck] shredfest, i always thought the vid of BRBB playing "[Dirty-] Rotten Kid" was awesome. BR really kixit on there. [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img] [img]cool.gif[/img] Pure swingin BB genius.
Ya gotta love Buddy's horn section, also [i can't stand a "lazy" horn section...which they were NOT]...even if he did get madder'n a hornet at 'em fr time to time on da BR Big [Bad Band] Bus...[that's why they were so "bright"]... ;-)
Speakg of horns, a little story along the premise...back in the late 90s sometime, the tourg band i was in got the opportunity to share the stage for 12 days w Stan Mark [of one time Maynard Ferguson fame] & the "Sin City Suitz," a great swg/BB w KILLIN' 7 pc horn sectn ATT. Drumr's name was Bruce Harper, & they sounded fantastic. Bruce was a super-nice cat & we hung a little bit over those days & "traded some licks." ;-) I played him the drum solo in DW's track Hard-Wired one day on break between our sets & he dug it a lot [shook his head in amazement]...'surprise, huh.
It was a shame because it was in a "southern" state...& the average crowd for their show was a geriatric one...they'd play a completely, ferociously BURNIN' set [also a couple of nice ballads], & afterward you could hear the "crickets' song" [like Holmes posted in that WFD thread ;-p], except for a few die-hards who knew WTF was going on & weren't exactly on their way to the morgue yet...I told Stan not to sweat it, because they should've had him at different time slot, or another stage entirely due to the demographic. Don't even get me started on many local or state events' musical acts "coordinating management" [often a misnomer for sure]. [Sometimes a flustered freshman fr your local Jr college...or retiree wanting "something to do"...good for them i suppose!] ;-)
Can anyone say, "logistical nightmare?"
Back to BR; he could be soft & sensitive as a whisper, but he could also turn around n be a furious tornado, kickin the tar outta those arrangements... [img]eek.gif[/img] /;-)
Regardless of how hard he seemed he could be, ya gotta admit, when he played, the guy had [img]graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

4got...I saw Calhoun in clinic, late 80s or early 90s, & he wasn't wearing the White Gloves. He jammed along to some pre-recorded trax; 2 of the about-to-be-released LC tunes ATT, awa 2 or 3 fuso tunes fr his upcoming solo[?] release...very edgy, on top, b*llsy...kicked some butt. He didn't come off that arrogant, in that clinic, to me anyways[?]; maybe, "self-confident?" ;-)
Said his 3 fave drumrs were ELVIN JONES, ELVIN JONES, & ELVIN JONES...white gloves? go figure.
Must've been "saving" his hands for the pile-driving in Colour.
Alternative Solution to the WG-Test: consistent application of vitamin E &/or aloe non-greasy hand lotion ["keeps it non-greasy so groove goes down easy," & stix don't get two outta hand]... also, "stickwax"... ;-)

Loved the white sneakers under a black tie from SS [img]wink.gif[/img] but his playing was great. What I said in my previous post, NP had a ride pattern like building his own drumriser; DING DING DA DING DING DA DING DING. Kinda "hard hat area" ride pattern [img]graemlins/thumbs_down.gif[/img] MSS was burning but his solo was a little busy to my taste.

Contrary to the theory in my post in that other thread, about how it's basically sort of like a 'compliment' to great latin music the way many 'Am-pocket-fuso' cats such as Weckl approach playing it, the inverse / opposite theory usually applies to rockers playing jazz/BB/swing... [img]redface.gif[/img] [img]wink.gif[/img]

It wasn't I who described many rocker's playg it, "swinging like a statue's phallus"...someone else did that a few yrs ago in here.
But i DID think that was one of the hilarious quips of the year...
The prob seems to lie w rock players playing that "textbook swing" pattern & comp-hits, having not really listened extensively to the genre or living it. It's usually not their bag. But w some fuso's today it seems to be cahnging slowly but surely[?].
